Las Vegas dermatologist, Dr. Candace Thornton Spann, offers a number of options to treat acne in patients of any age. Acne is a common skin problem that starts when dead skin cells and oil clogs the pores creating whiteheads, blackheads and visible red pimples. Acne remains the most common skin condition in the U.S., affecting men and women of every age, although it primarily affects teenagers, as well as middle-aged adults undergoing hormonal changes. The effects of acne go far beyond visible skin blemishes. Those with acne are at greater risk of suffering depression and poor self-esteem. Additionally, acne can leave permanent scars even after the active symptoms clear. Adults with acne, in particular, are often frustrated to find that over-the-counter treatments prove significantly less effective now than when they were teenagers.
"I could not be more pleased with my results. I would recommend Dr. Spann without hesitation."- Anonymous / Other / Apr 01, 2020
"While it is true that I did not leave the office 40 years younger, any thinner and/or smarter, (I really was not actually expecting any magical transformation), it was great. So when I was seen on time, treated well, given excellent consultation and no one made fun of my big big silly sun hat, I began to think I must be loosing my touch at being an insufferable windbag of a patient. Well at least they are giving me the chance to try again at my next visit. Thanks for that."- W.M. / Google / Feb 26, 2020
"She is one of the two best doctors in the world! Dr. Spann is kind and oh so smart; she is caring and oh so compassionate. Her intelligence far exceeds what I expected from anyone! She has saved my life literally on several occasions from skin cancer. I adore her and so will you!"- K.M. / Yelp / Feb 18, 2020

"I can not say enough about both Dr. Marvin Spann and Dr. Candace Spann. Let's start with Dr. M., I met him 24 hours before my bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction surgery. I don't care for male Dr.'s, will go out of my way not to see them, but when cancers involved, you don't always have a choice. Honestly I'm grateful that he ended up on my side, months of visits, 2 surgeries and I got a beautiful pair of foobs. As far as him blowing off infections, haha I developed one and had more added appointments than I wanted. Now to Dr. C, I originally made an appointment to get my skin checked, and while there she pointed out 3 things, one of which was flared up thanks to one of my medications. I had been suffering for months, my skin and I thank her. Then I went back for Botox and filler, best choice I've made. My husband also sees Dr. C. He had a spot she didn't like, she cut it out and his back looks just fine. I always say there's a reason for everything, so for me cancer added 2 amazing doctors that actually care to my side, and in Vegas that's hard to find."- J.G. / Yelp / Feb 10, 2020
Some individuals are lucky, in that they will rarely experience breakouts or ongoing acne problems. The majority of people, however, will battle acne on and off most of their young and middle-adult life. Acne may be as minor as a small pimple here and there, to inflamed pores and papules. Some will have acne that is severe enough to warrant some type of surgical or laser procedure, especially those who have persistent and unsightly cysts and nodules. Treatment will ultimately depend on the severity of the acne condition.
Custom Treatment Approach
In many cases, combining treatments brings forth the most effective results. Successful acne treatment requires an individualized approach. Custom treatment plans designed by Dr. Spann may include a combination of the following:
- Prescription Medication
- Chemical Peels
- Medical Grade Facials
- Laser Skin Resurfacing
- Surgery—Acne Extraction
Surgical Removal of Acne
For those with severe acne, even professional skin treatments such as laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels may not provide satisfactory results. For these men and women, a procedure called acne extraction may be the best option. During acne extraction, dermatologist Dr. Candace Spann will remove a large acne cyst, so that it becomes less painful, less visible, and less likely to leave a scar. Large or deep acne scars can also be removed surgically in some cases. During this procedure, she goes deep into the root to unclog the pore and surgically extract the infected particle.
Laser Treatment of Acne
Dr. Spann may attempt laser treatment before extraction. Acne laser surgery is able to address acne deep at the root, cleaning the infected pores. During an in-office appointment, the laser cleans, purifies and replenishes each acne spot and the surrounding area. A special vacuum gently lifts the acne impurities closer to the skin’s surface, and a broadband light is used to destroy acne-causing bacteria. Once the acne pores have been treated and are still “open”, topical ointments are applied to help keep the area clean and replenished.
