Liposuction

Could Liposuction Be Right For You?

Dr. Marvin Spann is highly skilled in performing Liposuction (“Lipo”) Surgery. This procedure removes fat from the body through a small puncture that is made in the skin using a tube-like device known as a “cannula”, which helps to loosen fat cells and suction them out. Common areas for fat removal include the stomach, hips, lower back, thighs, arms, chin, and chest. Liposuction creates a slimmer appearance and is ideal for those who are at a healthy weight but still have stubborn areas of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise. It is not an alternative to a weight loss plan, nor is it a surgery to “treat” being overweight. Las Vegas plastic surgeon, Dr. Marvin Spann, offers several liposuction techniques using PAL™ Power-Assisted Liposuction by MicroAire®, and Vaser® Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction, which allows patients to get rid of unwanted fat to reveal a fit, youthful appearance.

BEFORE & AFTER

What You Should Know About Liposuction

What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes excess fat from targeted areas of the body to improve body contour and shape. It is one of the most popular procedures for body contouring, helping to sculpt areas like the abdomen, thighs, flanks, arms, chin, and neck. Liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, but it is an effective method for targeting stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise.
There are various types of liposuction, including:
  • Traditional Liposuction: Uses a cannula (thin tube) to suction out fat through small incisions.
  • Laser-Assisted Liposuction: Uses laser energy to liquefy fat cells, making them easier to remove.
  • Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction: Uses ultrasound energy to break up fat before it is suctioned out.
Liposuction Benefits:
  • Targeted fat removal: Liposuction allows for precise fat removal from areas that are resistant to diet and exercise, such as the abdomen, thighs, hips, and arms.
  • Improved body contour: By removing fat, liposuction can dramatically enhance the shape and proportions of your body, giving you a more sculpted, toned look.
  • Permanent fat removal: The fat cells that are removed during liposuction are permanently gone. However, it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle to prevent remaining fat cells from growing.
  • Boost in confidence: Many patients feel more confident in their appearance and clothing after achieving their desired body shape.
  • Minimally invasive: Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure with smaller incisions compared to traditional surgical methods, leading to shorter recovery times and less visible scarring.
Surgical Technique
Pal Powered-Assisted Liposuction

PAL™ Power-Assisted Liposuction is an advanced liposuction procedure that uses a gentle back and forth motion to loosen and permanently remove unwanted fat deposits from the hips, thighs, abdomen, and other areas of the body. MicroAire's® minimally invasive liposuction technique is so mild that most patients can forgo general anesthesia. Bruising and swelling are also reduced, which means that the visible results will appear sooner. In addition, less downtime means patients can return to an active lifestyle more quickly. During the power-assisted liposuction procedure, Dr. Marvin Spann uses the MicroAire® PAL system to dislodge fat from troublesome areas such as the hips, thighs, and abdomen, restoring a smooth, natural-looking contour to the body. The gentle back and forth motion simultaneously removes and purifies the fat cells, allowing Dr. Marvin Spann to preserve the excess fat for transfer into the face, hands, or buttocks for patients that desire a fat transfer procedure.

During/After Surgery

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. It is considered an outpatient procedure. On average, each body part (i.e. tummy, thighs, etc.) will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. After surgery, patients will wear a compression garment on the treated areas. It takes about a full week for the bruising and swelling to dissipate, and can take several months for the final results to appear. Liposuction will produce scars where the cannula incision was made, but these are usually small and will fade over time.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and side effects associated with liposuction:
  • Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising are common and may take several weeks to resolve. The amount of swelling can vary depending on the areas treated.
  • Scarring: While the incisions made during liposuction are small, they can still result in visible scars. The surgeon will place the incisions in discreet areas to minimize scarring.
  • Infection: Infections are rare but can occur after any surgical procedure. Proper aftercare can minimize this risk.
  • Changes in sensation: Temporary numbness or changes in sensation in the treated areas may occur but generally resolves as the body heals.
  • Uneven contouring: In rare cases, liposuction may result in uneven fat removal, leading to irregular contours. This can sometimes be corrected with follow-up treatment.
  • Blood clots: Although rare, blood clots can occur after any surgery. You can minimize this risk by following your surgeon’s post-surgery instructions, such as wearing compression garments and avoiding prolonged immobility.
  • Seroma: This is the accumulation of fluid beneath the skin that can occur after liposuction. If it occurs, it may need to be drained.

PLAN YOUR PROCEDURE

Here’s what to expect as you plan your liposuction surgery:
  1. Consultation: The first step is a detailed consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. During this meeting, your surgeon will assess your areas of concern, discuss your medical history, and design a personalized treatment plan based on your goals.
  2. Pre-surgery preparation: You may be asked to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners, before the procedure. If you smoke, you will be advised to quit for a period before and after the surgery to help with healing.
  3. Surgery: Liposuction is typically performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can go home the same day as the procedure. The duration of surgery depends on the number of areas treated and the amount of fat being removed.
  4. Post-surgery care: After surgery, you will be given compression garments to wear, which help minimize swelling and support your new body contours. You will also be given instructions on how to manage pain and care for the incision sites.
  5. Recovery and follow-up: You will have follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and ensure proper healing. The final results of liposuction will become more visible after the swelling has gone down, typically within 6-8 weeks.

Liposuction PROCEDURE REVIEWS

Am I a good candidate for Liposuction?

You may be a good candidate for liposuction if:
  • You are at or near your ideal weight: Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure but rather a body contouring solution for areas with localized fat.
  • You have stubborn fat deposits: Liposuction is ideal for those who have areas of fat that do not respond to diet or exercise, such as love handles, a double chin, or fat on the thighs or abdomen.
  • You are in good overall health: You should be in good health, without any medical conditions that could affect the healing process.
  • You have realistic expectations: Liposuction can significantly improve body contour, but it’s important to have realistic expectations about the procedure and recovery.
  • You are a non-smoker: Smoking can interfere with the healing process, so it’s important to refrain from smoking before and after surgery.
