What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, often referred to as a "nose job," is a surgical procedure designed to reshape the nose, improve its appearance, and in some cases, address functional issues (such as difficulty breathing). Rhinoplasty can involve altering the bone, cartilage, and skin of the nose to create a more balanced and harmonious facial profile. This procedure can also address functional problems, such as a deviated septum, that affect breathing.

Surgical Technique

Open Rhinoplasty

Many surgeons prefer the open Rhinoplasty approach during nose surgery because they can gain a better view and better access to the inside of the nose. The incision using this approach is made on the skin between the nostrils or under the nose near the nostrils. Once the incision is made, the skin is moved back to allow access to the internal structures. The incision lines, which heal nicely leaving scars barely visible, are fairly small and usually measure between 2-3 mm.

Closed Rhinoplasty

The closed Rhinoplasty technique is used on noses that have features that are easily corrected. It is commonly used when the tip of the nose has good shape and is not too long, too wide, over or under projected. The incision during this approach is not visible after surgery because it is made on the inside of the nose.

During/After Surgery

Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility and typically takes around 1-2 hours to complete. It is considered an outpatient procedure. After surgery, patients will wear a nose splint and will experience bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes. Once the bandages and splint are removed, the nose will look normal, but it may take longer for the bruising to subside completely. It can take up to a full year for the nose to gain its final contour and softness.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

While rhinoplasty is a generally safe procedure when performed by an experienced surgeon, there are potential side effects and risks:

Swelling and bruising around the eyes, which may take 1–2 weeks to subside.
Temporary numbness in the nose or upper lip due to changes in nerve pathways.
Bleeding, which is common immediately following the surgery.
Infection, though rare, can occur if the post-operative care instructions are not followed.
Scarring, usually discreet and hidden inside the nostrils or along the natural contours of the nose.
Unanticipated results or dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose, though revisions are possible in some cases if necessary.

PLAN YOUR PROCEDURE

Step 1: Consultation – Your surgeon will evaluate your nasal structure and discuss your aesthetic goals or functional concerns. They may take photographs and use computer imaging to show you potential outcomes.
Step 2: Pre-surgery preparation – You’ll receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for the surgery, which may include avoiding certain medications and stopping smoking (if applicable).
Step 3: Surgery – Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The surgeon will make small incisions inside the nostrils (or across the columella, the tissue between the nostrils for open rhinoplasty) and reshape the bone and cartilage as needed.
Step 4: Recovery – After the procedure, you will wear a nasal splint and may have internal nasal packing for a short period. Swelling and bruising around the eyes are common but will gradually improve over the course of 1-2 weeks. Final results may take several months to fully appear.
