What Is Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a cosmetic procedure that uses liposuction to remove excess fat from one part of your body, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks, and then injects it into another area to restore volume and improve contour. This procedure can be used for both facial rejuvenation and body enhancement.

Common areas treated with fat transfer include:

Surgical Technique

During the consultation, Dr. Marvin Spann will discuss what donor sites will be most suitable and desirable for fat removal. During surgery, fat is removed from the donor site using a cannula. The tissue will then be separated and purified so that only the healthy fat tissue remains for transplantation. The fat will be placed in a syringe and augmented into the transfer site. The surgeon will simultaneously massage the area so that the fat settles where needed to create a satisfactory, smooth shape and contour. Multiple injections are usually needed.

During/After Surgery

A Fat Transfer is considered an outpatient procedure and is performed at an accredited surgical facility. In the majority of cases, especially where larger injection areas are concerned, general anesthesia will be used. For smaller areas, such as the lips, the surgeon will use a local anesthetic. After the procedure, the fat removal areas, as well as the injection sites may be swollen and red. This will subside in a short time. This procedure continues to be popular among patients because it offers little risk and little downtime, while delivering great results.

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects associated with fat transfer:

Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising are common in both the donor and recipient areas and may take several weeks to fully resolve.
Fat reabsorption: Not all of the transferred fat will survive in the new location. The body may absorb some of the fat over time, meaning you may require a touch-up procedure for optimal results.
Infection: While rare, there’s a risk of infection following any surgical procedure. Following post-operative care instructions helps minimize this risk.
Asymmetry: In some cases, the results may not be symmetrical, especially in areas like the breasts or buttocks. This can sometimes be corrected with additional fat injections.
Numbness: Temporary numbness or changes in sensation can occur in both the donor and recipient areas. This usually resolves as the body heals.

This is my first time making a YELP review. I felt that I must share my wonderful experience with Dr. Marvin Spann.
