IPL (intense pulsed light) is not a laser. A laser uses a focused beam of light. IPL uses pulses of light that are more diffuse. IPL can be used to treat wrinkles, spots (such as sun spots, age spots, and freckles), and unwanted hair. At Couture Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marvin Spann and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Candace Spann are proud to offer IPL as a nonsurgical aesthetic treatment. To learn more about IPL and decide whether you could benefit from a treatment, schedule a consultation at Couture Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Las Vegas, NV.
"I could not be more pleased with my results. I would recommend Dr. Spann without hesitation."- Anonymous / Other / Apr 03, 2020
"While it is true that I did not leave the office 40 years younger, any thinner and/or smarter, (I really was not actually expecting any magical transformation), it was great. So when I was seen on time, treated well, given excellent consultation and no one made fun of my big big silly sun hat, I began to think I must be loosing my touch at being an insufferable windbag of a patient. Well at least they are giving me the chance to try again at my next visit. Thanks for that."- W.M. / Google / Feb 26, 2020
"She is one of the two best doctors in the world! Dr. Spann is kind and oh so smart; she is caring and oh so compassionate. Her intelligence far exceeds what I expected from anyone! She has saved my life literally on several occasions from skin cancer. I adore her and so will you!"- K.M. / Yelp / Feb 18, 2020

"I can not say enough about both Dr. Marvin Spann and Dr. Candace Spann. Let's start with Dr. M., I met him 24 hours before my bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction surgery. I don't care for male Dr.'s, will go out of my way not to see them, but when cancers involved, you don't always have a choice. Honestly I'm grateful that he ended up on my side, months of visits, 2 surgeries and I got a beautiful pair of foobs. As far as him blowing off infections, haha I developed one and had more added appointments than I wanted. Now to Dr. C, I originally made an appointment to get my skin checked, and while there she pointed out 3 things, one of which was flared up thanks to one of my medications. I had been suffering for months, my skin and I thank her. Then I went back for Botox and filler, best choice I've made. My husband also sees Dr. C. He had a spot she didn't like, she cut it out and his back looks just fine. I always say there's a reason for everything, so for me cancer added 2 amazing doctors that actually care to my side, and in Vegas that's hard to find."- J.G. / Yelp / Feb 10, 2020
The area you are having treated will be cleansed before we apply a cool gel. You will be given a pair of dark glasses or other eye protection equipment that you must wear during the treatment to protect your eyes. Light pulses from the IPL device are then applied to the treatment area. The IPL will be passed evenly over your skin until the area has been properly treated.
What to Expect
The pulses from IPL treatment feel like a rubber band snapping against your skin. Depending on what area of the body is being treated, we may offer a numbing gel or other light sedation. Treatment should take about 20 – 40 minutes. After the treatment is finished, we will clean and moisturize your skin. You should be careful to protect your skin from ultraviolet (UV) rays since the treatment will make you more sensitive.
Your costs depend on what part of the body is being treated and your aesthetic goal. To get maximal results, multiple treatments may be necessary. Treatments are usually spaced about a month apart. Most patients pay between $400 and $3,600 for their IPL treatments.

What is the Recovery?
IPL treatment requires no downtime. You will be able to leave after your appointment and go directly back to your normal day. The treated skin will be pink and you may experience a tingling sensation for a couple of hours after treatment. After several hours the redness will subside and there will be a coffee-ground look to the skin. This sloughs off in a couple of weeks. It may take a little while to see the final improvements from your treatment and most patients will need multiple sessions to get their best results.
How Does IPL Work?
IPL penetrates the dermis (the second layer of skin) without harming the epidermis (the first layer). The light that is emitted is absorbed by the pigmented areas and converted into heat. The heat breaks up the pigment for smoother skin with a more even tone.
How to Prep for IPL?
Patients about to undergo an IPL laser treatment are usually asked to avoid self-tanners and excessive sun for 2 – 4 weeks prior to the procedure. You should discontinue the use of minocycline, tetracycline, doxycycline or Retin-A/Renova several days before each treatment.
