ReTress May Be the Answer...

Thousands of women experience balding or thinning of their hair due to hereditary, nutritional, or physiological causes. Any woman can suffer from hair loss, although it is more frequent in older women and those who have experienced illness. Hair loss can be a particularly devastating experience for women, as many associate their hair with their sense of beauty and femininity. Las Vegas dermatologist, Dr. Candace Spann, has successfully treated hair loss in women of all ages. She has a special interest in this condition, and has devoted much of her professional life researching and developing haircare products that help prevent female hair loss. Dr. Candace Spann finds it especially rewarding to see her patients’ self-confidence increase as their hair becomes fuller and healthier. There are many possible causes of hair loss in women, thus Dr. Candace Spann will carefully evaluate your skin, listen to your concerns, and review your medical history to devise the most effective treatment plan.

Causes of Female Hair Loss

Around 30 million U.S. women will experience hereditary hair loss, while others will struggle with situational hair loss, brought on by a specific event. The most common type of female hair loss is Female Androgenetic Alopecia (also known as female pattern hair loss). This condition can be caused from genetics, aging, or the action of a specific male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is also found in females in low levels. This hormone, when it increases, is known to attack the hair follicle, which can cause hair thinning and hair loss. Once estrogen decreases (such as with age or menopause), DHT increases. Telogen Effluvium is the second most common type of hair loss. This condition causes sudden, excessive thinning and shedding. Common causes of sudden hair loss include certain medications, severe illness, abrupt changes in hormone levels such as with childbirth, poor nutrition, medical conditions such as anemia, and even extreme levels of stress.

Diagnosis of Female Hair Loss

Hair loss in women isn't always as easy to diagnose as it is in men. There are many triggers, conditions and circumstances that can cause female hair loss. During the initial consultation with Dr. Spann, a complete examination will be conducted, which will include the use of a specialized hair scanning technology, which will assess the distribution of hair loss, hair thickness, and where the thinning is occurring most. Nutrition and diet will be discussed, as well as any medical conditions, current medications, or life-changing events. A scalp biopsy may be necessary, and a blood work analysis may be required if the cause of hair loss is uncertain or there is a concern for scarring alopecia.

Female Hair Loss Treatment

Once Dr. Spann has diagnosed why the hair loss is occurring, a treatment plan will be discussed. Fortunately, in many cases, female hair loss can be treated successfully with today’s advanced treatments. Nonsurgical solutions include a daily program of hair and scalp therapy using a specialized volumizing glycolic acid shampoo and conditioner, which reestablishes the moisture content and natural pH of the scalp and hair. Dr. Spann may also recommend certain hair repair vitamins and supplements containing amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein that produce keratin, a vital ingredient which makes up close to 97% of our hair. Prescription medication may also be used to slow down and stop hair loss. Rogaine® is the most common medication used and it is clinically proven to dramatically improve the speed and rate of hair loss. A newer technology that may be discussed is low-level laser therapy, which helps restore thinning hair. Dr. Spann believes that a synergistic approach is sometimes the best treatment plan, and thus will develop a tailored approach which may include a combination of these methods to slow, stop, or in some cases, reverse hair loss.
