What Is A Brow Lift?

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to raise and rejuvenate the brow and forehead area. It targets drooping brows, deep forehead wrinkles, frown lines, and sagging skin that can create a tired or angry appearance. By lifting and smoothing the forehead, a brow lift creates a more youthful, alert, and refreshed look. The procedure can also improve the appearance of the upper eyelids by reducing the excess skin that may be contributing to hooding or obstructed vision.

There are different types of brow lifts, including traditional (coronal), endoscopic, and temporal (limited incision) brow lifts. The method your surgeon uses will depend on your anatomy, the severity of your brow sag, and your aesthetic goals.

Surgical Technique

There are several techniques that can be considered during a Brow Lift procedure. Some of the approaches are interchangeable with a Forehead Lift, but may be used to achieve different objectives.

EYEBROW INCISION
Also known as a direct Brow Lift, this approach places the incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Depending on the structure of the brow, an incision can also be made at the brow hairline to complete this process. Weak and sagging skin and tissue will be lifted and reattached to the brow bone. This approach does not affect the forehead and works to treat a sagging eyebrow and eyelid.

ENDOSCOPIC BROW LIFT
This approach provides a subtle change in the position of the eyebrows. It uses several small (1-inch or smaller) incisions near the hairline of the forehead where an endoscope (specialized camera) is placed, and surgical tools are used to elevate the eyebrows. The stitches are located inside the incision to help minimize scarring. While this technique is a common approach, sometimes the results can be unpredictable.

CORONAL BROW LIFT
This approach places the incision lines several inches above the hairline of the head. These incisions are typically long, yet still hidden by the patient’s hair. This technique repositions the eyebrows by pulling them up to offer an alert and revitalized appearance. Sometimes hair will need to be removed during the incision closure process where the skin is reattached. This particular approach does offer dramatic results and in most cases actually repositions the hairline higher

What Are the Possible Side Effects?

Like any surgery, a brow lift carries some risks and potential side effects, although these are generally rare. Some possible side effects include:

Swelling and bruising: Swelling and bruising around the forehead, eyes, and brows are common after the surgery but typically resolve within 1–2 weeks.
Temporary numbness: Some patients experience temporary numbness or tingling in the forehead or scalp area, which usually resolves within a few weeks.
Scarring: Scars are usually hidden within the hairline or in natural folds of the skin. However, some patients may develop visible scars, particularly if the skin heals poorly.
Hairline changes: If incisions are made in the hairline, there may be a slight change in the hairline position or a temporary thinning of hair in the treated area.
Infection or bleeding: Though rare, these complications can occur but can be minimized by following proper post-operative care.
Asymmetry: In some cases, the brows may not lift equally on both sides, though minor adjustments can be made after surgery.

Post-op Follow-up:

Typically, the first follow-up will be within 1 week to remove stitches and assess initial healing. Additional visits may be scheduled to track progress, discuss any concerns, and ensure optimal results.
