Dermabrasion (also referred to as “dermaplaning”) is a facial rejuvenation procedure that smoothens fine wrinkles and other surface irregularities, giving the skin a softer appearance. This is accomplished through a controlled method of surgical scraping. During a dermabrasion procedure, the top layer of skin is manually exfoliated using a rotating brush or instrument, and then a chemical peel solution is applied to promote cellular turnover. The skin eventually peels, leaving a second layer that is healthy, clear and rejuvenated. This procedure results in a smoother complexion. Las Vegas plastic surgeon, Dr. Marvin Span, offers dermabrasion, as well as many other skin rejuvenation procedures that can be discussed during an initial skin consultation.
"Dr. Candace Spann was incredible. Super patient, thorough, and very nice. I came to her for a checkup after having-a-less than desirable experience elsewhere and she was wonderful. After finishing paperwork there was just about a 10 minute wait and that was it. I'm so thankful to have found her!"- J.M. / Google / Sep 28, 2018
"After my granddaughter asked me if I was having a baby like her aunt, I started seriously looking at liposuction. I'm on the thin side and have tried diet and exercise to remove the bulge around my middle. I researched other facilities and options and found that none of them would give me the results I wanted. Dr. Marvin Spann was brought to my attention by his wife, Dr. Candace Spann, who I was seeing for yearly skin cancer screenings. Dr. Marvin Spann did a wonderful job on my liposuction, and a year later, I'm even happier with the results! These are both dedicated, professional, competent and caring doctors who want to make sure that their patients receive the best care. I travel from Henderson to see them because they are the best!"- D.C. / Yelp / Sep 15, 2018
"My husband suffered from a severe allergic reaction to medication he was prescribed. He is African-American and the allergic outbreak targeted his face. During the healing process, his skin tone darkened about 3 times his normal color. We didn't know where to turn for help as we were concerned about doing anything to his face. We made an appointment with Dr. Candace who recommended a protocol of chemical peels and laser. Dr. Candace's esthetician, Tonia, was amazing!! After the first few treatments, we noticed the difference as his skin began to lighten and even out. My husband elected to do 2 rounds of chemical peels and 2 rounds of laser therapy. His skin tone is better than ever!! Thank you Tonia for your expertise over the past year. We are so happy with the results."- M.C. / Yelp / Aug 28, 2018

"Dr. Candace Spann is amazing! I was having problems with my hair thinning. She was able to get to the root cause of the problem when all other dermatologist I had been to wrote it off as stress. She really cares about her patients and my son who is almost two absolutely loves her!! It will take a while for you to get in because Dr. Spann is so awesome, but she is worth the wait! Thank you Dr. Spann!!"- P.P. / Yelp / May 07, 2018
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning are performed together in the same setting. The dermabrasion technique is performed first. The surgeon scrapes off the outermost layer of skin using a high-speed rough rolling brush. Then, a dermatone, which looks like an electric razor is used. This surgical tool has a blade that moves back and forth to smooth and trim scarred surfaces and other skin defects, such as craters. Following this procedure, a soothing ointment will be rubbed onto the face. Some patients will require multiple visits to achieve their results.
During/After the Procedure
Dermabrasion procedures are outpatient and performed in an accredited surgical facility. In most cases, a numbing agent is used to help moderate and control any discomfort. The procedure itself may take up to 2 hours, but spot treatments are usually concluded within 30 minutes. Following the procedure, the face will be red and swollen and it is common for scabbing and crusting to occur over the areas that were treated. It is imperative that patients avoid sun exposure to protect the new layer of skin. The skin will look soft and smooth with a visible decrease in irregularities.
Dermabrasion and dermaplaning treatment costs vary depending on the number of spots and range of skin treated. Treatments average from $100 for smaller areas of skin and could increase to as much as $3,000 for full coverage.

Men and women of all ages can benefit from dermabrasion and dermaplaning. Individuals who have fine wrinkles, uneven skin tone and moderate scarring from acne or mole removal may use this technique to achieve a smooth appearance. This procedure may not be recommended for patients who:
- Have darker skin - dark complexions may become permanently lightened or discolored with this treatment
- Are prone to skin rashes and skin irritations
- Have frequent flare-ups of fever blisters or cold sores
- Have freckles but do not want them removed
- Have recently had a chemical peel
Does it Remove Freckles?
Dermabrasion is beneficial in removing age spots and sun spots, but is not recommended to remove freckles. There are other targeted technologies that can remove freckles. This may include a specific type of chemical peel or a laser treatment.
Dermabrasion or Chemical Peel?
When choosing between these procedures, it is important to remember one uses surgical tools and the other does not. However, both are minimally invasive and create visible results. Patients who wish to improve the surface of the skin may choose a peel. Those who wish to use a stronger method and go beyond the skin’s surface to remove scars, aging spots, etc. may prefer dermabrasion.
